Consider a Learning Community
Learning Community students take classes together and live on the same residence community floor. Learning Communities are based on different majors and are housed in Renovated rooms in Crawford, McElroy, and Preska I Hall.
There is no additional fee to join a Learning Community, however students who are interested must apply to enroll (which is separate from the housing application). Students are enrolled on a first-come, first-served basis and space is limited, so apply early!
If you are accepted into a Learning Community, you will be assigned to the appropriate floor for your Learning Community (regardless of the preferences listed on your housing application).
Learning Community students may request a roommate, however the roommate must also be accepted to the same Learning Community program.
We begin accepting housing reservations at 8 a.m. on October 2. When you apply, you will have an opportunity to make room type preferences and request roommates. You may make changes to your application until May 20, 2018 (making changes does not affect the order in which your application was received).
If you apply for housing by our May 20 priority deadline, you will self-select your hall and room placement during our Room Selection process. The date you apply for housing will determine your rank in the Room Selection process. For example, a student who applies for housing in October will have a higher rank than a student who applies in March (higher rank means you will select your room before students who applied for housing after you). The Room Selection process will begin in late-May, with an email invitation sent to the email address that you provide in your housing application.
Applications are received on a first-come, first-served basis as long as space is available. We recommend that all students submit their housing application by our May 20 housing priority deadline. Due to the popularity of our semi-suites, students with that room type as their top preference should apply as close to October 2 as possible (since there are limited numbers of each room type).
Apply for housing online. At the time of application we will request a $250 prepayment that holds your reservation and is applied to your fall room charges. Your application is considered complete when we receive your application, your $250 prepayment, and a signed Housing Contract.
Keep in mind that a signed Housing Contract is in effect for a full academic year. When you apply for housing online, you will review the contract and agree to the terms. If you are under 18 years of age, your parent/guardian must also sign the contract. To do this, print a hard copy of the Housing Contract and have both the student and a parent/guardian sign it and return it to us. You may mail it to us at Residential Life, 111 Carkoski Commons, Mankato, MN 56001 or you may scan/email a signed copy to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Your application will be complete when we receive your application, $250 prepayment, and a signed Housing Contract.

Students have the option of selecting their roommate(s) or receiving a random roommate. If you would like to find your own roommate, you should use our Residential Life roommate search program. The program is inside the housing portal, E-Services, as part of your housing application. You will have to request your roommate through the system and your roommate must accept in order for the system to allow it.
If you opt to receive a random roommate, we will make every effort to honor your roommate and lifestyle preferences utilizing the information provided on the application.
The deadline to submit roommate/suitemate requests is May 20. The Department attempts to assign smokers only with other residents who smoke; however, when space is limited exceptions must sometimes be made. More roommate information.
If you should change your mind and decide not to live on campus, $200 of the $250 prepayment is refundable if your cancellation is received (or postmarked) by July 1, 2018. For more information on how to cancel your reservation, click here.
Residential Life collaborates with the LGBT Center to offer roommate matching services for LGBTQIA students. If you're interested in finding an LGBTQI-friendly roommate, please fill out this form so that we may help pair you with another student who has the same interest. Students who choose to take advantage of this service still need to complete the housing application process (as described above).
Please note that completing the form does not guarantee a positive living experience, however it may help provide an environment that is friendly to your gender and sexual identity. Also, you may experience some wait time between filling out the form and getting information about a potential roommate depending upon how many students choose to be paired through this service.
